Join plant ecologist–turned–artist Nicki Lang for an inspiring 3-hour workshop exploring the art of gelli printing with the natural world as your muse. Gelli printing is a beginner-friendly monoprinting technique where you can create layered, one-of-a-kind prints without the use of a heavy press. You’ll begin by coating a flexible gel plate in acrylic paint. Then, choose from a variety of provided plants and textured items like string to arrange on your plate. You can print your original design onto high-quality printmaking paper or remix your plate to create a second layered composition. Experiment with positive and negative space as you compose your own botanical designs.

Nicki will introduce the basic techniques of gelli printing before opening up the floor for creation. She’ll be on hand to help guide you through the process and share further tips and tricks about making art with plants. No prior experience is necessary—just bring your curiosity and a love for the natural world.

Class registration fees include admission to the Whatcom Museum and all materials needed to create multiple botanical gelli prints. Participants will be able to take their gel plate with them to continue printing at home.

About the Artist

Nicki Lang is a creative dabbler.  After making leather goods for 10 years, she picked up a palette knife and started painting Pacific Northwest landscapes. Lately, you can find her hand-building with clay and playing with both sculpture and functional forms. When she is not doing visual art, Nicki can be found writing, playing the banjo, or spending time outside with her husband, two boys, and goofy dog, Lupinella.

Workshop registrations are final and non-refundable. If you’re unable to attend, you’re welcome to transfer your spot to someone else as long as you notify us 24 hours in advance. Please plan to arrive within 15 minutes of the start time. Late arrivals will not be admitted or refunded.
